CK Studios Airbrush Class June 24th 25th

I was fortunate enough to lock in a seat at Caleb and Kat's airbrushing class over the weekend, in Seattle Washington- a father's day present from my wife.

Let me tell you, the class was worth the 200 bucks. In fact, the level of teaching, and catering, I received as a student was far more valuable then the price of admission. I learned so much about my airbrush, about color theory and dynamism when painting minis. Both Caleb and Kat were very patient and giving over the two days- I can't speak highly enough about this class.

I think it is a must take class, for novice to experienced AB painter, and I strongly suggest readers to seek out Caleb and Kat and sign up for a class. The financial investment is a pittance when compared to the training, you will receive, and the friendships that will be forged.

Check out the link to CK Studios, here:

The Independent Characters took the class and covered it in their podcast (along with a nice interview with Caleb and Kat).

If you are curious about airbrushing minis, or, want to improve your airbrush experience I can't recommend CK Studios enough.

Choosing an Airbrush Part 2

In the market for an airbrush I narrowed my choices to a select few that are tailored toward models and model painting. I narrowed my list to six choices with a widely varying price point. The Badger 150 and the Paasche VL are both described as entry level airbrushes- great investments for their relative price! However, both of these brushes were siphon fed, whereas I want a gravity-fed airbrush. Iwata brand airbrushes became increasingly attractive to me the more I researched airbrushes. With sudden recollection, I dug up an old email from Brandon Palmer, of Gray Matter Musings fame.

Choosing an Airbrush

It is important to note that an airbrush should be used in a well ventilated area (for instance outside, in a garage or in a well ventilated studio) and that you, the user, wear a breathing mask when using and operating an airbrush. Fine paint particles when inhaled can harm or kill you, so cover up.

For quite some time I have wanted to purchase an airbrush and now I'm finally going to take the plunge. Having little to no prior first-hand experience with this tool, I started with the fundamentals: What does an airbrush do? I found a great starting place to be the Airbrush Wiki. After pushing through the fundamentals, I quickly discovered there were three airbrush characteristics that are very important to consider when purchasing an airbrush. They are;
