Let me tell you, the class was worth the 200 bucks. In fact, the level of teaching, and catering, I received as a student was far more valuable then the price of admission. I learned so much about my airbrush, about color theory and dynamism when painting minis. Both Caleb and Kat were very patient and giving over the two days- I can't speak highly enough about this class.

I think it is a must take class, for novice to experienced AB painter, and I strongly suggest readers to seek out Caleb and Kat and sign up for a class. The financial investment is a pittance when compared to the training, you will receive, and the friendships that will be forged.

Check out the link to CK Studios, here:
CK Studios

The Independent Characters took the class and covered it in their podcast (along with a nice interview with Caleb and Kat).
If you are curious about airbrushing minis, or, want to improve your airbrush experience I can't recommend CK Studios enough.
KDM Card Sleeves:

I will be adding to this post as I add pictures of the different Kingdom Death Monster cards in card sleeves.
First up are gear cards. Each card is around 50-51mm square. I tried two different offerings, and, opted with Mage 53x53 premium sleeves (pictured below):

As you can see, the card fits snug inside the sleeve, with about .5- 1mm space. I tried a 52x52, unfortunately, the cards bowed, and, stuck out of the sleeve.

Kingdom Death: Monster is a cooperative board game set in a horrific land where players fight and die together to protect and nurture their fragile settlement from sinister monsters hungry for human flesh and soul...

How exciting that Adam Poots, creator of Kingdom Death: Monster has kickstarted the game's 1.5 update. This is a chance to help fund the update to Kingdom Death: Monster, to obtain the core game, or to obtain out of print expansions and model kits (Dragon King, at 75 bucks, anyone?)

This game is made by a small group of passionate people, headed by Adam
Poots. The game and it's contents are of the highest quality, and are
worth the hefty price tag

Now is your chance to hop on board and get the game at 35-50% off!

I for one love the game and can't wait for the 1.5 overhaul! One theme that reoccurs in my many campaign is the importance placed on individual survivors that are gifted, or, become gifted through experience and battle. The game was always supposed to be the story of the settlement home to these individuals. According to Adam, that will be addressed in 1.5 offering ways for individual settlers to make a lasting impression on their home.
So approximately 4 weeks ago, this gorgeous army was auctioned on Ebay by AA-Games located in the UK. The Ebay seller could not provide me any information as to who this amazing army previously belonged to. Although I managed to win one of the guardian lots, sadly, I did not receive the auction.

I am posting screen caps of the original auctions in the hopes that a reader may recognize this army. I would love the opportunity to pick the brain of the person responsible for painting these models as I want to apply this same paint scheme to my SM army and
Our four newest survivors took to the hunt at the beginning of Lantern Year 11, tracking a White Lion. Three of the four warriors lived to return home, the fourth was an unfortunate victim to the monster's playful batting; the monster literally blowing up her head in a visceral explosion!
LY 12 began with the choice of a new principle for the settlers. I chose barbarism over romanticism, as, it provides the entire population now (and moving forward) +1 strength. After that was resolved, Junction was visited by the hooded knight. Aeris was randomly chosen as one of three hunters that had exactly 1 hunting experience each. She bravely met the knight and, consulting the 'mysterious agenda' table pictured above, rolled a lantern 10. Aeris earned the Twilight Sword and the ability to acquire weapon proficiency in the cursed weapon (one level prior to weapon proficiency availability). The Knight will return to test my survivor in a few years should she survive...

The survivors chose to hunt a level 1 white lion in the hopes of a
scoring a relatively predictable battle. With some finesse and a lot of luck, my goal was to attempt to gain Aeris a proficiency level with the Twilight Sword. Of course, a few things would have to fall into place in order to be successful; see, the sword requires the user to be insane in order to wield it (an insanity level of +3; Aeris only had 2 point of insanity at the onset of this hunt), and suffers an accuracy of '9 - specialization level', or, a 9 to hit in her case.

Jondlr's gear grid: Melee duty with strength buff.

Looking at each gear grid you can see that I willy-nilly'd gear crafting in the first few years. To do it all over again, I'd give everyone a full set of armor first, then, move onto lion and leather. Oh well- lessons for the next campaign.

Back to the story: The four survivors pushed out from Junction and inched their way across the hunt board. The random instances I drew were pretty forgettable- two White Lion hunt cards, and a random roll that resulted in the hunting party being entrusted with a portculis key.

With the hunt over, the White Lion showdown could begin. I set up the game board with tall grass and two random terrain types:

My first strike of luck was drawing a survivor's corpse as one random terrain piece. Aeris had only two points of insanity- she needed three in order to swing the Twilight Sword. Getting her to scavenge the survivor's corpse would be my first order of business. I positioned my archers at cardinal points from the Lion, both taking position in tall grass for the evasion bonus. Jondlr and Aeris began closer to the beast to potentially draw and keep the lion as close to board center as possible.

After the Lion's turn, Aeris moved to search the survivor's corpse, rolling a '5' to earn insanity and a random resource- sweet!

Jondlr positioned himself behind the lion for the blind spot bonus and attacked the Lion's heel. Jondlr rolled a lantern 10 and knocked the beast down.

When my survivor critically wounded the monster, I knew I had a very good chance to earn Aeris her first TS proficiency.

Unfortunately, Aeris was unable to capitalize on the lion in this turn because a Twilight Sword requires movement and action activation in order to swing...heavy, dude.

Imagine my surprise when, on the lion's turn I drew 'sniff'.
The lion didn't move!
This allowed Aeris a turn to move into position behind the beast. She struck with her katars, wrecking the White Lion and earning a lion resource as a result. The monster took it's turn and rolled a one due to it's persistent injury 'ruptured tendon'. Down fell the lion, allowing Aeris to strike on a +3! She got one shot and rolled a '4'. Aeris caused a wound with the Twilight Sword and once the lion was dispatched would earn one weapons specialization. The lion was culled turn four allowing the survivors to return home victorious!
Talk about an exciting showdown session! All of my survivors lived, and, Aeris got a notch on her twilight sword!
Up until this nemesis encounter, I felt like I had a grasp on the game's difficulty. This battle was a definite DPS check that I failed miserably. I won't spoil the encounter other than to say that he fully wiped my party with only one wound caused by our team.
The next year we were visited by armored men and due to our low population cap we received a gift of one large dead monster. I equipped four decendents of our deceased (pictured above) to hunt a Screaming Antelope. Whelp, little did I know that the antelope tracked by our brave, young, inexperienced crew had been hunted and killed by a level 2 White Lion.

Yeah, the inexperienced hunting party put up a good fight, but, proved to be no match for the kitty. Without spoiling a level 2 White Lion's abilities, our group's biggest problem were two archers that got hung up and did little damage for the fight. Ah well, four more deceased, four left.

The next Lantern Year the four left had a set of twins bringing the village total to 6. The Hand calmly strode into Junction and ripped one poor fellow's chest apart. We get to battle him in two years. And then there were five!

I think I will send the four greenies out on a level 1 White Lion to at least get some experience and prepare for the coming challenge. Ugh, Kingdom Death life!
http://feeds.feedburner.com/
Gonewild40khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03288386569896024651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934671644641472241.post-71602277944306059722015-11-07T10:46:00.002-08:002015-11-07T10:48:29.282-08:00Kingdom Death: Monster! I have got to say, Adam Poots is such a class act. I purchased a copy of Kingdom Death: Monster. Quite a little investment for a board game, but, when you take into account the figures, the mechanics, and the replay value- well worth the price. I bought it directly through Adam's site, Kingdom Death during the last pre-order wave he opened up.
I got my copy the day before Halloween, and I was truly excited. I couldn't wait to crack open the box and peruse the contents. The sheer amount of cards and plastic sprues is staggering. I sleeved playing cards over the weekend, getting to the cardboard punch outs on Sunday. That was when I discovered what appeared to be white mold on the cardboard pieces:
I mean, at first glance I thought it was dust, or paint rubbing off, but, doing a little research I discovered that numerous customers were reporting that it was white mold. I contacted Adam Poots directly and received his response almost immediately. He was very upset and promised to resolve the issue however I saw fit. I chose to return the game in exchange for a copy free of defects. Adam not only agreed, he is going to personally check my replacement game to ensure it is defect-free. As a result, Adam has made me a loyal customer. The level of customer service he has demonstrated to me, personally, is astounding- I can't praise him enough. After removing all of the game cards from sleeves, I solemnly packed up
the game box and shipped it back to Adam yesterday. Here are some pics I
took before parting ways with the game:

A local player recently had his army stolen in Tacoma Washington. As they are a distinct looking army, I wanted to share this information in the event any good Samaritans may have information regarding it.
Here is a link to to the original post and a link to the victim's profile.

Odds are small, but, you never know. Hopefully, someone may recognize it.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/
Gonewild40khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03288386569896024651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934671644641472241.post-60134311665289360682015-10-04T15:28:00.001-07:002015-10-05T08:39:18.508-07:00Kingdom Death Sci-Fi Twilight Knight Still Available: CMONI see that the KD Sci-Fi Twilight Knight that includes two KD:Monster game cards is going for 30-40 bucks on Ebay: Don't buy it.

CMON still has it in stock for 15 bucks plus shipping- still over 70 units available. Since I'm impatiently waiting the delivery of KD:Monster, I went ahead and scooped a Knight up myself- you should too.
Edit: Kingdom Death: Monster is up for pre-order on Poots website. After shipping (inside US) the game comes to 320.00 bucks- quite a steal to the 400-500 bucks trending on ebay just hours before pre-orders were opened. The investment is heavy (almost an entire army equivalent in most game systems), but, justifiable for the sheer amount of content you receive.Get it while you can!

I would have to rely on model and unit placement to diminish flyer presence, but, I think 50 marine bodies is probably the minimum to accomplish this (especially with the new bases LOL). I considered Archangels Sanguine Wing which offers around 400 points of free upgrades, but, I don't foresee this formation getting a pass at events b/c of those free points.

Dante
is a LOW, but, he is such a beast now that he is EW and swings at
initiative. Dante and Priest ride with Vanguard Vets for a precision
drop: The command squad consists of a five man with a couple of
stormshields to soak up wounds the turn they arrive. They are also armed
with melta combined shooting with Dante to pop transports if needed. I
armed the priest with the AP2 power sword relic. AP2 with that high
initiative on the charge is freaking scary. Not to mention all vets sans
McFister will swing at I5 on the charge giving the vet unit a leg up on
the opposition. Ultimately, the command squad is just a delivery system
for Dante and Priest so time will tell if divesting the unit of excess
equipment is worthwhile.
Death Company are so cool now that they
can score and contest. The combination of Rage and Relentless make
bolters the default weapon choice in my opinion. I'm starting out light
on the power weapons in favor of a couple of infernus pistols, giving
the unit a tool against high AV outside of assault. Will see how I like
this load out and if I need to tweak it...
Assault Squads; cheap
throw-away melta units meant to threaten Knights and high AV tanks. What
isn't to like? For a 115 points you get two meltas and a combi! For a
135 you get two meltas and two infernus pistols. I've ran the infernus
loadout on an assault sgt (back when you got 1 melta per 5 bodies). It
is devastating, but, I'd like to at least start out with the minimum
investment on a toss away Sgt. If two meltas and combi don't perform
well enough on the table, I'll defer to the gunslinger loadout. I
purchased an additional pod to mix things up a bit; I can choose to drop
the Dev squad as a melta distraction, or, the scout squad as a
backfield distraction. Of course the scouts can just outflank the
backfield, which may seem laughable on paper, but, FC combined with Red
Thirst will give that unit some teeth.
Tactical squads with H flamer/ flamer combos to burn out any hiding infantry.
All
of my drop pods have deathwind missile launchers. Just another annoying
way to cause wounds on low armor OBSEC units.Pods give better
flexibility allowing me to create threats as well as respond to an
opponent's deployment.
Instead of clogging up the blog with posts to edit this list, I'll just keep updating this specific post. Juggling this list, I've changed it up a bit. It is a two CAD list that combines Baal Strikeforce with an standard CAD for obsec troops. Astorath, Death Company, Scouts, and Assault Squads comprise Baal Strikeforce. Librarian, Tactical Squads, and drop pod make up the standard CAD:

Astorath's point reduction in this latest codex makes him a strong consideration if you plan to field DC, as, Astorath is now the only way to get Liturgies of Blood. I played with Astorath in 5th and enjoyed the unit, but, he was pricey back then. I broke up the DC unit from my original list into two distinct harassing units. A 10 man unit of 3+ armor that can't combat squad is a lot of eggs in one basket. As much as I love the idea of a huge mob of DC relentlessly jumping around the battlefield, Its a unit begging to be clobbered by an opponent. Breaking it up into two gives me another target consideration to throw at my opponent (at the expense of an additional kill point). I also slimmed each squad down to one axe and one fist. That gives me punching power to deal with high toughness units, and high AV vehicles.
Scout squads fall into the Baal Strikeforce CAD. Since they are part of the strikeforce, I gave both units combat knives since I'll be hiding them in combat when I'm not hiding them in ruins. The extra drop pod gives me the freedom to surgically drop a unit of scouts where I may need them most: Late game contention, line breaker, or, denying line breaker. My standard CAD will be led by an epistolary Librarian whose job is to buff Dante, and Dante's unit. I gave him a standard staff rather than Gallian's. I will have to play test whether the 10 points is worth scrubbing an HP off a 2HP unit with 3+ save just to reroll a 1. The weapon's strength modifier will allow him to scratch things with his stick. 10 man Tac squads are meant to combat squad (CS) hence each unit's diversified weapons. That gives me a total of 6 obsec units when I include their drop pods. As I mentioned earlier the sole drop pod in this CAD can be utilized by a scout squad when convenient. Finally, I have four melta assault squads that straddle both CADs meant to neutralize Knights, high AV units, and the occasional fortress.

Overall, I think this list flows better than my initial list. It lacks the ability to address flyers directly, and will rely on it's footprint to mitigate flyer presence/performance.

No new units. No Centurions and no talons.
Bummer. I really would have liked to have either units in this codex.

Death Company is now elite as DC dreadnought
Okay so they are not OBSEC, but, can they score? Elite section is shaping up to be crowded, but, I don't doubt there will be a 'formation' to make these guys troops at some point.

Predator Baal is Heavy Support
Oh look, the other heavily populated section. Will it retain fast?

Librarian Dreadnought is HQ
Hmmm...with nerf to psychic powers in 7th, there will have to be a good gimmick to take him.

Mephiston is HQ and IC
Saw that coming, but, not LoW? Read on and you'll see why.

All units have now Furious Charge
No more prerequisite chalice or Death Company...cool. BUT, will this codex provide players the viable means to build an assault based army? Probably not.

No squadrons for Dreads. "Standard" dreads are now Elite, Furiosos and DC dreads too. Librarian dreads are HQ.
Crowded.

Only troop choices are Tactical squads and scouts.
Ew... Assault marines have not been viable for some time, but, for those of us that purchased assault marine armies such as myself...fuck, lol.

Tacticals can get two heavy flamers!!
Trolololol drop pod or LRs

No terminator armour for DC. Jump packs are now only +3 points. On the other hand their WS has been downgraded to 4.
If the DC still can't take and hold objectives I don't see a reason to take 'em. It would have been sweet to see termie DC, but, c'mon.

Dantes Axe is +2S, AP2, mastercraft and NOT unwieldy. He is now eternal warrior.
Fuck Oh Dear! No shit he should be swinging at initiative- it only took what? 6th edition to figure that out? That whole axe = unweildy thing? Stupid. If Dante gets EW and can't be doubled out- badass. The question is, 'will Dante still make SG troop choices (OBSEC)?

Chalice gives +1WS
Meh, for all of those assault marine armies...

Vanguard Veterans cannot charge after DS
Too bad, but, not surprised that VVs would lose heroic intervention. Do you think there will be a good reason to take VVs in the new codex?

Only rule is combat squads
Better be combat squads; hopefully lose the bloody special rule ATSKNF > Fearless.

As I see in the pictures of the codex there is nothing coming after the termi Kit. Lib is separate.

Warlord traits are:

1. Warlord gets Rampage
pffft

2. Warlord gets +1 I
Hmm..good for hit and run.

3. One warlord's weapon gets mastercrafted
Oh. boy.

4. Warlord gets Adamantium will
Not bad.

5. Warlord gets Descent of the Angles (Dante's trait)
No room to scatter. This could be fun, but, not worth gambling on.

6. 12" fearless bubble
Ugh, I just hate giving up ATSKNF for fearless. There are better ways to get this rule.

Physic powers are:

Primaris: Blessing. +D3 to A and I to psyker or target character at 12"
Cool...but that may just be the BA player in me that still wants a viable assault army.

1. Malediction. Target unit at 12" takes a Moral test with -2
Hmmm, this used to be a fun spell to cast in conjunction with an IG psychic choir.

2. Blessing. Target unit at 18" gets Rage. If they had already that rule, they get +1A instead
pfffft.

3. Blessing. Psyker and his unit get 5++
invuln? that is an upgrade from the 5+ cover from 5th ed. This spell will probably be too cost prohibitive to cast, unfortunately.

4. Focussed witch fire. Target makes 2 T tests. Take one W for each failed test. If targed dies, place 5" blast with S4 and AP5.
pfft

5. Beam.12" S8, AP1 Lance
Hmmm. This is similar to the 5th ed power except you got 4D6 AP1 Lance. Probably be more expensive and difficult to cast...nerf.

6"Blessing. Targe infantry unit, moves 12" in the psychic phase. No charging after this movement.
Whelp, it would have been nice if the unit affected by this spell could assault in the same turn, but....

Fast vehicles are:

Rhinos, Razorbacks and Baal Predators
Okay, Baal Preds are fast but reside in the heavy slot...FU

Special rules for DC: FC, Fearless, Relentless, FnP, Rage. They cannot reroll to wound if chaplain in the unit. Only Astorath gives them this ability.
Hm, bummer they don't get the reroll to wound. Do you think these guys will get the option to take heavy weapons?

Detachment is nice:

Mandatory 1 HQ, 1 Elite, 2 Troops
DONT MAKE ME TAKE ELITE. Will there be anything worthy of this tax?

Optional: as usual, but 3 additioanl Elite (Total 4)

Special rule: +1I when charging, all the army, any turn.
One time? Meh. For all of those assault marine armies b/c they are troops?

Mephiston has chaged a lot:

WS BS S T W I A L A

6 5 5 5 3 5 4 10 2+
So take a look at this: Mephiston got nerfed. His BS dropped to five, as well as his toughness. Last edition he was toughness 6, so, getting doubled out was impossible (unless there are big Ds that do 12 or more base). Now he can get doubled out at str 10. According to this rumor he didn't get EW, so, non BA players will rejoice. Likewise, his BS got nerfed, so he isn't going to be able to avoid gets hot.

Warlord trait: Adamantium will
Okay.

Lvl 3

Special rules: FC, IC, Fleet, No Fear, Hypnotic Trance: Roll 2D6 if fighting in a challenge: If result is the L of the opponent or more, Mephiston hits on 2+ (hmm, I think previous edition was better?).

Has one unique power: Blessing, he gets S10.
He can double his doppelganger out.

His sword is AP3
BOOOO

Cost: 175 !!!!! (That's goooooood)
Meh. He got nerfed so cost isn't that good compared to what was lost (and not provided).

Sanguinor pretty the same but: gets only 4++, re-rolls to hit and wound in challenges
Ouch. Squishier...what is the point of taking this guy again?

Sanguinary Priests are HQ, 60 points and units he joins get +1WS and FnP. The are IC btw.
Well, shit. A very crowded HQ slot- do you really want to take these guys? They probably still can't hold a shield so...

Gabriel Seth and Commander Dante are indeed Lords of War
I would be interested to see Seth's statline.

Then the relics, I am translating what Waaaghschale could see on a poor photo. So careful with these

BA Relics:

Relics:

- One jump pack that allows the bearer and his unit re-roll when DS and when other units Intercept -> Snapshots. (25)
Thats cool for all of those viable assault armies.

- Gives Fear, and fear tests are done with -2 L (10)
Hm...interesting.

- One item that gives an additional warlord trait strategic table. (15)

- One physic weapon +2S, AP4, bearar may re-roll 1 in the psychic phase. If rellod die is a 1, bearer takes one wound. No saves allowed. (10)
Bleh

- One Master-crafted plasma pistol, that does not get hot. (25)
hurr durr

- One AP2 power sword. (25)
Wow. Nice...except it will cost 25 points? pfffft.

Troop units from deathstorm are troops, fyi.

Corbule gives to all BA units at 6" +1WS & +1I. Not accumulative with an standard chalice bonus. 120 points, 3 wounds
Hmm.. this guy went up 20 points- is that worth +1 Initiative? Maybe if he still gets a 2+ FNP?

Big question of the night: Can BA Captains take stormshields?

12/09/14
Faeit has devoted a post to rumors:

Furiosos: Same cost, but the claws now cost +10 points. Getting additional attacks rule is gone. Now claws are Sx2, Shred, AP2.
Bummer. Its not like Dreadnoughts were selling me in 6th or 7th, but, losing his special rule makes this guy autoshelf.

Does Mephiston have access to anything that makes him move faster than
6" in movement phase, e.g. Jump pack or Psychic abilitiy like "Wings of
Sanguinius".
No
Looks like Mephi got his wings clipped. They are really toning him down.

Sanginor, is he an IC?
No
Sanguinor has the cost of a Stormraven.

The rules are basically the same, but he does not improve the stats of a character anymore. This rule is gone.
This guy...pointless, bloated cost, weird fluff. Just when I thought this guy couldn't get any more awkward...

Can you confirm if Dante still unlocks Sanguinary Guard as troops?
no, he does not unlock SG as tropos. BTW I haven't seen any FoC
unlocking in the codex. Not even the command squad, which is Elite now.
Didn't think that would be the case, but, I was hoping. Not that SG are worth taking in their current iteration.

Any news on the 2 tycho?
Tyco now does not ingore armour saves. His comb¡ weapon cannot use special ammo anymore.
Oh snap! That rule that allowed Tycho to ignore armor saves was boss. Losing that makes him an overpriced chump 2/4++. Losing special ammo is like a second kick to the nuts, but, makes for one less consideration when list building.

Is there still a priest in honour guard?
Honor Guard is gone from the codex.
FUUUUU

Can sangujnary priests still take bikes/jp/terminator armour?
He can buy a bike, but not a Terminator armour.
Wow, no termie priests? That sucks.

The codex dropped, and the changes weren't inclusive. To be honest, my biggest gripe isn't the fact that ASM are no longer troop choices, or, Mephiston's nerf, or Baal Preds were moved into heavy slot and lost scout, or, Chaplains and Priests are no longer elite selections...
My gripe are the formations. Baal Strike Force is more akin to what I would like to build on, but, it does not confer OBSEC. Blood Angels Battle Co does, however, it is filled with units that I least prefer, and the list of required units is pretty large.

Anyway, here are most of the final changes in the current codex:

Assault Marines no longer troops; 15 pts cheaper, 5-man squads can
take two special weapons; may exchange Jump Packs for a free drop pod,
or, free Rhino (no longer able to take Razorback)

Slot assignments were changed across the board; all tanks are heavy, dreadnoughts elite, ICs are HQ, Libby dread HQ...

Mephiston toned down and made an IC

Tycho, Sanguinor, Gabriel Seth nerfed

Dante buffed and LOW

DC can now claim and contest objectives, lost a WS

Drop Pods moved to fast attack

Land Raiders no longer troop choice dedicated transport

Corbulo lost his 2+ FNP (but still confers FNP), but, special rule
allows re-roll on seize initiative, again. Grants +1 WS and I. Increased
15 points

Baal Preds lost scout

Captains may upgrade to artificer armor

Sanguinary Priests cannot take Terminator armor

Reclusiarchs gone; Chaplains do not confer LoB (re-roll to wounds for DC)

Astorath is only IC that confers LoB to his unit of DC, on turn he charges; dropped 55 points

Chalice gives +1 WS; Narthecium gives FNP

Tac squads 20 points cheaper; can take a heavy flamer for 10 pts

Scout squads cost 20 points cheaper; camo cloaks reduced in cost by 1
pt, heavy bolter reduced by 2 pts; hellfire rounds cost 5 pts. Missile
Launcher cost increased to 15 pts, flakk missiles are an additional 10
points

Dev squads do not appear to get the option for hellfire round upgrades to heavy bolter

Sanguinary Guard received a 35 pt reduction; can take up to ten per
squad; chapter banner reduced by 5 pts, death masks reduced by 4 pts
each (these guys still don't get an invuln save)

Blood Talons lost special rule to generate infinite wounds

Magna Grapple is no longer an equivalent melta strength weapon that provides chance to pull tank to dread

Vanguard Vets decreased in cost by 20 pts; Heroic Intervention changed to current flavor

Vanilla Razorback increased by 10 pts; special weapon turrets decreased by 15 pts

Blood Angel psychic powers have returned with slight adjustments. Wings is a WC 2 blessing that targets an infantry unit
that grants 12" move in psychic phase. The unit cannot charge in the
turn it was cast. Shield of Sanguinius is a 5++ invuln at 2 WC to cast
(instead of cover ala 5th ed). Blood Lance is a true beam, but, instead
of 4D6 " range, it is 12 " static- 2 WC to cast.

Librarians are 35 pts cheaper, and can still only upgrade into Terminator Armor in order to obtain better saves.

Chapter relics offer a jump pack that confers reroll on deep strike
and deep strike table as well as making interceptor units 1 BS. A crown
that grants the special rule fear and units have to make leadership
saves at -2 modifier. A blade that confers AP2. A plasma pistol that
doesn't get hot. Veritas Vitae confers an additional role on the warlord
chart. A staff that allows psykers to reroll a 1 at the cost of one
wound. The JP, crown, and vitae aren't bad.

https://www.change.org/p/games-workshop-limited-refocus-your-business-model-on-the-sale-of-a-game-and-support-of-a-gaming-community-vice-the-pure-sale-of-collectible-miniatures

I think the petition succinctly bullet-points most of the issues that separates Games Workshop from greatness, but, I want to stress the following:

1) Well-written, competitive rules that are diligently and actively maintained. I can forge the narrative with shit rules, but, at least price them accordingly. Right now, rules are priced at a premium. The product does not reflect it's price point.

2) Support FLGS. For the love of Christ, Games Workshop stores fucking suck. One-man stores do not provide a fun place to play games- especially when there are all of these silly rules excluding aftermarket parts and figures. When ONE PERSON operates a store, where all occupants have to step out every time that person needs to 10-100, or take a break- a fun, positive, customer service experience will almost certainly NEVER be met (regardless of how nice and professional your store managers are...and they are very nice, professional people).

When I go into my local store, Olympic Cards and Comics I am greeted with plenty of tables to play, friendly, professional, service. Gabi, OCC owner, strives to keep the environment family and kid friendly which is a plus; the store doesn't stink and is clean. She lets me play with my kit-bashed figures that include non-GW parts- Wow, what a concept! There is also restrooms available for customers, and the store stays open till the last person leaves. The first step to an active gaming community is providing a clean, safe, and fun place to not only purchase merchandise, but, to model, paint, and play with said merchandise as well. Kudos, OCC.

3) After-market bits...c'mon. You slayed all of the competition and you're just going to leave that vacuum? Upcharge for the individual sprues and allow customers to tailor their purchases based on their imagination.

4) Support conventions, RTS, and GTs. There is a community that would love to interact with you, and the benefit would pay off in spades. These events are no longer relegated to highly competitive douchey WAAC players (common Jervis-Lover misconception). There are plenty of events that are offering competitive and narrative events under the same roof and its bringing the community closer together. Bay Area Open, Las Vegas Open, Nova Open, 11th Company, T-SHIFT, Adepticon, PAX West- they all run alternative events along with a 40K grande tournament.

5) Oh shit, sorry to do this to you but; welcome to the digital age and social media. Embrace it. Even forums are a little dated these days when you have twitter, facebook, google circles, etc. Oh, you don't want big, mean internet trolls bullying your pages and posts? Step over to Neverwinter's forums for a lesson in Nazi forum moderation. Their forum mods run such a tight ship that Captain Bligh blush with jealousy. Surprise: the Neverwinter mods work for free. Volunteers that take it upon themselves to tirelessly regulate the NW forums and eradicate any post that even hints at breaking the TOS.

6) Price point. How do you expect to bring in new blood (btw, you need new blood) if you price the majority of your product so high? Your games are fucking nerdy to begin with- how are you going to attract the teenage demographic you have been focused on? Mom and Dad's checkbook only goes so far, and you're competing against a lot of other media entertainment syncs (you may not like it, but, you are competing against video games). You need to figure out how to competitively price your product to attract new blood and hook them in. You need to competitively price your product to combat all of those alternative game companies that you have allowed to grow and bloom in your garden...so many weeds that have taken root over the last 10 years- so many options for a spending conscious consumer to deter them away from your overpriced, big, clunky, shit rules, games.

These days, young people want to compete. Give them clear concise rules to hook them in. Price an entry level set- the price of a video game (40-70 bucks) so that the curious can find out if they like your game or not.

Anyways, check out the petition- there are some very good points. Rant off.
Some of my initial considerations- not all encompassing:
Assault is still weak with regard to jump pack Blood Angels- they're just too expensive and lack oomph.
Psychic powers are a lot less reliable to cast this edition and require a significant amount of point investment to work.
AV 11 is still weak, but, I am interested to test fast Rhinos and Razors. I don't think they will hold up, especially as armies transition to take on high AV.
Object Secured (OBSEC) Land Raiders...

I created a list using one CAD, without allies. There is an argument to be made to include GK Coteaz, henchmen, and maybe a Stormraven for the mindstrike missiles. Codex: GK Coteaz does not appear to be FAQ'd to no longer include the special rule, 'Lord of Formosa' and as near as I can tell still makes henchmen troops. LoF was removed from Coteaz' special rules in the Inquisition Codex, right?

Another option would be to ally in DA for the PFG and bolter banner...

Getting back to a pure BA list; one of the things that I love about Blood Angels is the troop ability to take land raiders as dedicated transports. In an 1850 list, I can reasonably take 3-4 land raiders that are object-secured (OBSEC). My question is do I take a mixture of anti-tank and anti-troop, or, do I invest in one or the other? Time and games may tell. Here is my initial crack at a list:

1850 Pts - Blood Angels Roster

HQ:
1 Librarian with Force Axe

Elites:
1 Techmarine
1 Servitor Unit

1 Techmarine

Troops:
Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Meltagun
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta

1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta

Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Flamer
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider, Multi-melta

Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Flamer
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider, Multi-melta

Heavy Support:
1 Stormraven Gunship, Las Cannon, M Melta

Four OBSEC Land Raiders on the table would seem very intimidating. I want to try a combination of LRs and LR Crusaders. In fact, I swapped out the Assault Cannon (AssCan) on my Stormraven in favor of a Las Cannon (LC). I think LCs are the go to weapon to counter lists that rely on high AV units to carry it (like mine). Giving each Techmarine a Servitor translates to a 50% chance of succeeding repair rolls. BA Servitors are expensive- 15 points each, but, I think its worth it to bump up success rate from 33% to 50%.

I feel like only fielding one Stormraven, the unit is prone to AA fire and other fliers. Should I swap out the 4th Land Raider in favor of a second Stormraven? Maybe the list would look more like this:

1850 Pts - Blood Angels Roster

HQ:
1 Librarian with Force Axe

Elites:
1 Techmarine
1 Servitor Unit

1 Techmarine
1 Servitor Unit

1 Techmarine
1 Servitor Unit

Troops:
Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Meltagun
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta

Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Meltagun
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider Crusader, Multi-melta

Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Flamer
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs
1 Land Raider, Multi-melta

Assault Squad
3 Assault Marines with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword
1 Assault Marine with Flamer
1 Sergeant, Melta Bombs

Heavy Support:
1 Stormraven Gunship, Las Cannon, M Melta
1 Stormraven Gunship, Las Cannon, M Melta

So, I swapped out the Land Raider for a second Stormraven. My 4th assault squad will retain jump packs and can deep strike onto the board, or, ride in a 'raven. This list leaves me an additional 30 points to play with...Maybe special weapons on a couple of my Sarges? In 5th, and the beginning of 6th I'd invest in Infernus Pistols for that extra melta shot. Playing through games, it became clear just how often I could whiff on my single melta shot dice rolls. Having an extra shot is important- especially in the absence of reliable prescience.

It will be interesting to look back at this post in 4 months and compare the old codex with the rumored new BA codex slated for this fall.
Now that 7th Edition is confirmed for release on the 24th of this month, I wonder which GT will be the first to utilize the new rule set? When 6th dropped in June of 2012, Brandt and the Nova Open team hit the ground running, and were the first US GT to utilize and incorporate 6th edition into a Grand Tournament. That year, Wargames Con (now dubbed, 'Texas Games Con') dodged the bullet due to that late June release date in correlation to their GT schedule. Brandt and team had to make some tough decisions with the minimal amount of play testing afforded to them due to time constraints. I didn't agree with all of the decisions that were ruled, but, under the circumstances I completely understood why certain rules and limitations were set in place for the 2012 GT. Brandt succeeded, and in the process set the standard for the US GT circuit with regard to 40K.

Flash forward to 2014, and look: The 7th edition release date of May 24th, is a little over a month before the Texas Games Con GT. Will Jwolf and the boys decide to play it safe and stick with 6th edition tournament rules for the event, or, embrace 7th Edition and potentially set the standard for the rest of the 2014 US tournament scene?

If the decision were mine to make, I would poll my customers and go with the majority. With barely a month to prepare for a new edition that will incorporate Escalation and Stronghold Assault- not to mention all of the sweeping new changes confirmed by White Dwarf and Jervis Johnson, I would definitely go with the majority opinion of my paying customers.

If Texas Games Con plays it safe for 2014, that will leave the weight of incorporating 7th edition into a tournament game to Brandt and Company's shoulders'. I think they did a very good job setting the standards for competitive 6th edition, which means the game will be in good hands. If, for some reason Brandt defaults to 6th edition for Nova Open (I highly doubt he will), then would BAO be the next US GT in line to deal with the 40K rules transition? Reese and Frankie have proven to be equal to the task, as far as I am concerned.

Side boards, summoned demons, psychic phase, consolidation after winning assault, and the big D will now be tournament standards. Who will make history and be the first to incorporate 7th edition into their Grand Tournament? I'm sure it will be interesting- welcome to the wild west!
With the release of the new <strike>IG</strike> Astra Militarum codex, I wanted to expand the small allied force of DKOK I have accumulated over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, many of the DKOK kits are not available for purchase on the FW website. I inquired about said units, and if/when they would be made available. Here is the response I received, and I wanted to share it with anyone else that may be in the same boat:

Hi,
Thank you for your email. New moulds are being made for these models, the work will take several weeks but we intend to have them back on sale as soon as possible.

Periodically master models need some work so we can continue to produce moulds, this means we have to take the products of sale for a short time to replace and repair the master models and then produce new moulds. The amount of time this takes depends on many factors including the level of detail in the model and the level of work the designers and mould makers already have scheduled. Unfortunately this means we can not give an accurate estimate of how long they will be unavailable for but we will have them back on sale as soon as we can.
I am fed up with the current state of 40K. It isn't the rapid release of codices, or the inclusion of supplements. It isn't the dataslates, or Escalation, or Stronghold Assault. I think all of those things are compelling. It wasn't ADB attempting to convince 3++ that all Forgeworld is approved by Games Workshop because Games Workshop has never stated 'it wasn't'
(by the way, I'm looking forward to my inclusion in the President's next vacation to Hawaii- I mean he didn't tell me I couldn't come, so I must be invited!) Nope, the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me was the lack of clear, concise rules. Each new release only seemed to compound and punctuate that fact. I mean, let us set aside the argument that Games Workshop is first and foremost a model company because, they sure as shit charge as much for their rules as they do for their models!

A 'beer and pretzels' game, whose focus is to, 'forge the narrative' produced by a 'models company' for casual players is not an excuse to charge premium prices for poorly written rules. I am a casual player. With a house, a child, and a 60 hour a week job I simply don't have the time to devote to 40K to become an exceptional player. I am a competitive player, and I lose A LOT when I do get to play. I try to take at least one lesson from each game in order to improve my performance. Unfortunately, I get to play the game a lot less than I would prefer.

What does this have to do with forging the narrative, or beer and pretzels? Well, by definition I am a casual player and 40K in it's current incarnation, should then apply to me. 40K should appeal to me. Instead the game has overwhelmingly frustrated me to the point that I don't want to play. I don't want to purchase new models and units for my collection. I don't want to start a new army, or purchase expanded rules. Nope, quite the opposite- I am mothballing the lot, out of sight, in the attic. I love the aesthetics. I love the iconography. I loved the game (before it was broken). I am willing to wait and see if the game swings back toward a more balanced and fair form of play. I have a lot of money and time invested in 40K. I am holding out that someone will salvage the game that I used to love so passionately.

This notion that players are either one or the other; casual or competitive is a fallacy. Neither are mutually exclusive: I enjoy forging the narrative as much as I enjoy analyzing my performance in the attempt to improve as an opponent. I'm a casual player defined by the amount of time I have to devote to 40K, but, I enjoy playing competitively. I bet I'm not the only one in which a duality exists.

Games are played for a lot of different reasons, but, in the end someone has to win and someone has to lose. That isn't bad. That is competition. How you fill that time while competing is up to you and your opponent. The rules define and manage that contest, and they should make it as fair a contest as possible. In the current state of 40K, more energy is exerted attempting to understand or bridge shoddy rules interaction rather than forging the narrative. That isn't acceptable. You want to know what else isn't acceptable? Dicing off with your opponent because of poorly written rules when we, as consumers, spend 50-60 bucks per rule book.

C'mon.

Internet pundits, ADB, Jervis Johnson, hardcore 40K gamers, and casual 40K gamers the current state of the game is a mess. It would seem that Johnson's goal is to shove the game so far away from any sort of competitive play as to be almost unplayable by casual and competitive alike.

I'm not mad; I am simply resigned. Until the day comes that Jervis is dethroned (or at least proclaims a new mandate in the lands of Gee Dub fixing this shit) I'll be spending my hobby budget on games that cater to casual and hardcore players alike; created by game companies that do not consider 'tournament play' foul, dirty words. Games like Dropzone Commander, and Malifaux 2E.

In 2014 I hope that we, as a community, can recognize that better rules only benefit said community as a whole. You may relate to a specific type of player, or gravitate to a certain playstyle, but that doesn't make you any more or less entitled to enjoy this game and hobby. We should be supporting one another and striving to improve the game and hobby for everyone rather than nipping at the heals of one another. If blame is to be laid for the current state of the game, then place it squarely at the foot of Games Workshop and Jervis Johnson.

It isn't the associated price tag- that's for sure. It's the printer's ink. I love the smell of a new book when you first open it's pages: That aroma of printer's ink that wafts up with each turn of a page- it's the best. With all of the colored pictures in this book, there is A LOT of printer's ink!

One of the cool toys in the new codex (and garnering a lot of attention) is the grav gun. The grav gun is a salvo weapon that uses the target's armor rating to determine what it wounds on: So, a target with an armor value of 2, is wounded on a roll of 2+ by a grav gun. Grav guns also have a unique rule when fired at a vehicle: A roll of 1-5 does nothing. On a roll of 6, the vehicle is immobilized and suffers a loss of a single hull point. Did I mention that grav guns are salvo 2/3 weapons? Oh yah, they are. So, a unit can move and shoot the first number at half of the weapon's maximum distance, or stand still and fire the second number up to the weapon's maximum distance. See how relentless would really benefit this weapon? Now imagine a bike unit with grav guns- or even a White Scars bike unit with grav guns backed up by Thunderfire Cannons...ouch! A grav gun costs the equivalent of a plasma gun and has the potential to wreak havoc on monstrous
creatures as well as heavily armored targets.

So, are you convinced to swap out your plasma guns with grav guns? If you are, brace yourself as the current Ebay price for a grav gun bit is hovering right around 12 bucks! What other options do Space Marine players currently have if Gee Dub is unwilling, or unable, to sell grav gun bits at a reasonable price?

Third party bits companies! In fact, there is a healthy amount of options to choose from at no where near the cost of the current Ebay price:

The first option is my current favorite- the Ion Rifle; an offering from Anvil Industries
Next up, the is the Nuke Gun by puppetswar, and let me tell you- this is quickly earning a place in my heart. I really like the little lightning bolt on the side of the weapon- wouldn't that look keen in the hands of White Scar bikers? The only potential issue I have, personally, is the hand that is sculpted with the gun. Even though I really like the pose and detail of the hand, it is a left hand and will have to be removed on most if not all of the weapons in order to magnetize the gun to my models...
Rob Baer's Spikey Bits offers a cheap DIY kitbash alternative to grav guns- check it out!

See, there are plenty of affordable, visually pleasing alternative bits that can be used in lieu of grav guns. If you have found alternative weapons that I haven't posted here, please share them in the comments section! Likewise, with Games Workshop having little to do with tournaments these days, 'the sky is the limit' with regard to third party bits and models!

Before I wrap up the grav gun portion of this blog post, I wanted to share a link to 40K Global where Alex Rae breaks down his interpretation of the current rule quandaries surrounding grav weapons. I have to say that I agree with him and share his interpretations. I think the most important thing to remember if you're planning to attend a tournament or grand tournament is to inquire before the event how rules for grav weapons will be handled by the TO. If you're playing a friendly game of 40K, remember to discuss these rules with them ahead of time to help keep the pace of the game. If neither of you can agree, dice it off to avoid hurt feelings and lost time!
James Tigurius Kirk- er, I mean Tigurius the Psyker, Ultramarines!

Now that Tigurius is an auto-take for any space marine army or allied army, the figure that Gee Dub provides has come under a lot of negative scrutiny as a result. Wait, why is Tigurius an auto-take for any Space Marine player? Well, lets see: He is a level 3 psyker, allows a player to re-roll any reserve roll for any unit from the same detachment; Tigurius gets to re-roll any or all of the dice to see what powers he knows, (...I'll pause for a second to let you catch your breath) he gets to re-roll failed psychic tests due to his badass Hellfire Helm, AND he can generate powers from ANY of the disciplines in the book. The only thing that Tiggy doesn't get stock is an invulnerable save. That means you're rocking his 3+ armor...Every rose has it's thorn? (I'm trying not to laugh as I type this)

Personally, I think that the current Tigurius sculpt is one of my least favorite Gee Dub offerings: Tigurius' face looks stretched and deformed first of all. Not to mention if Tigurius has to stop and shoot something with his bolt pistol wouldn't you say he has already lost the fight? Overall, there is no dynamism in this figure that screams, 'Best psyker in the UNIVERSE!' As a result I decided not to purchase it.

So what other options do we have available? The newly released librarian model? I mean it is badass, if you want to field a guy that looks like he is sixty-something and ready for retirement. Not to mention that the figure doesn't come with customizable options out of the box (boring). Look at the picture below- the guy looks like he needs a walker! Look, I don't have anything against geriatrics, I thought that the Astartes didn't age?! Maybe it is a side effect of dabbling with the warp! Oh, did I mention that the figure is 30 bucks? CHEESE AND RICE! That exceeds Forge World prices. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful figure, but THIRTY bucks?
What other options are left available to us? Well, Ron Saikowski, Father of the From The Warp blog group provided a really cool step by step tutorial how to create a psychic hood for a space marine. He even goes a step further by providing further inspiration for kit-bashing librarians: Check out the Flesh Tearer libby! I mean talk about a badass springboard to create your own Tigurius- wow. FTW is a hobby mecca that I constantly visit, and revisit for inspiration and tutorials- you should too.

Last but not least, Green Stuff Industries sells a really cool modeling tool that will fashion hoses out of green stuff! Obviously easier to pose than guitar string, I strongly suggest checking out their tentacle maker package! If you want to have a bunch of hoses protruding from your Libby's armor and helm, then this is the product for you.
